DAY 92 — Reducing the Self
Day 92 turns attention inward only to diminish it. Much of what interferes with seeing comes from anticipation: how the image might land, what it might signal about you, whether it will be noticed. These pressures bend attention away from the world and back toward performance. When that loop is interrupted, proportion returns.
By working without an imagined audience, the photograph sheds excess intention. What remains is functional seeing: placing yourself, reading conditions, recording what is present. The image does not argue or impress. It simply holds.
This day teaches humility as a technical discipline. When the self recedes, accuracy strengthens. The world is allowed to appear without being shaped by demand.
In short:
Release audience → quiet intention → record what is there
Principle
Ego bends attention toward performance. It seeks reaction, approval, and distinction. When ego leads, perception narrows and accuracy suffers. Reducing the self restores proportion. The photograph becomes an observation rather than a statement.
Practice
Photograph without imagining an audience. Do not consider how the image will be received or valued. Let the act be functional: notice, frame, record. Attention should remain on the subject, not the outcome.
Photographic Task
Make one frame intended only to be accurate. Avoid emphasis, drama, or flourish. If the image feels neutral but precise, the self has receded enough.
Reflection
Removing the self clarifies seeing. When ego loosens, the world appears with less distortion. Accuracy improves as intention quiets.
Extra Tip
Lower expectations before lifting the camera.

Arguably (IMO) the best tip so far, Matthew. Photograph for the image itself - for ourselves and not for how it will be received if it's ever posted online or anywhere else for that matter.
